What Does Code P0126 Mean?
Diagnostic Trouble Code P0126 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected that the
engine coolant temperature is too low for normal engine operation. The engine fails to reach the expected operating temperature within a specified time or driving condition. This code is commonly caused by a thermostat stuck open, a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, or cooling system issues.

- Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
- Engine takes a long time to warm up
- Poor fuel economy
- Weak cabin heater performance
- Rich fuel mixture
- Temperature gauge stays below normal

How to Diagnose
1. Visual Inspection
- Check the coolant level and inspect for leaks.
- Inspect the ECT sensor connector and wiring.
- Verify that the cooling fan is not operating continuously with a cold engine.
2. Live Data Test (Autel)
- Open Diagnosis → Engine → Live Data.
- Select Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT).
- Start the engine from cold and monitor the temperature increase.
- The coolant temperature should rise steadily to approximately 85–105°C (manufacturer dependent).
- If the temperature remains well below normal after 15–20 minutes of driving, suspect a thermostat stuck open.
- Compare the ECT reading with the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) before starting the engine. Both values should be similar on a cold engine.
3. Multimeter Test
- Verify the 5V reference voltage.
- Check sensor ground continuity.
- Measure ECT sensor resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's temperature chart.
4. Smoke Test (If Applicable)
A smoke test is not normally required for P0126 because this code is related to coolant temperature rather than intake air leaks. Perform a smoke test only if additional vacuum leak symptoms are present.
Common Repairs
- Replace the thermostat.
- Repair coolant leaks and refill the cooling system.
- Bleed trapped air from the cooling system.
- Replace the faulty ECT sensor.
- Repair damaged wiring or connectors.
- Clear the DTC and verify that the engine reaches normal operating temperature during a road test.
Severity
Moderate. Although the vehicle usually remains drivable, operating below normal temperature increases fuel consumption, emissions, and long-term engine wear.
