What Does Code P0125 Mean?

Diagnostic Trouble Code P0125 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has determined the engine coolant temperature did not reach the required operating temperature within the expected time to enable closed-loop fuel control. This code is commonly caused by a thermostat stuck open, low coolant level, or an inaccurate Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.

How to Diagnose

1. Visual Inspection

  • Check the engine coolant level.
  • Inspect for coolant leaks.
  • Inspect the ECT sensor connector and wiring.
  • Verify that the radiator fan is not running continuously on a cold engine.

2. Live Data Test (Autel)

  • Open Diagnosis → Engine → Live Data.
  • Monitor Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT).
  • Start the engine from cold.
  • The temperature should increase steadily to approximately 85–105°C (manufacturer dependent).
  • If the temperature remains unusually low after normal driving, suspect a thermostat stuck open.
  • Compare the ECT reading with the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) before starting the engine. Both values should be similar when the engine is cold.

3. Multimeter Test

  • Verify the 5V reference voltage.
  • Check sensor ground continuity.
  • Measure ECT sensor resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's temperature specifications.

4. Smoke Test (If Applicable)

A smoke test is not normally required for P0125 because it is primarily related to engine coolant temperature and thermostat operation. Perform a smoke test only if additional intake vacuum leak symptoms are present.

Common Repairs

  • Replace the thermostat.
  • Repair coolant leaks and refill the cooling system.
  • Bleed air from the cooling system.
  • Replace the faulty ECT sensor.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connectors.
  • Clear the DTC and verify that the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Severity

Moderate. Although the vehicle can usually be driven, prolonged operation with a cold-running engine reduces fuel economy, increases emissions, and may accelerate engine wear.
