P0127 Intake Air Temperature Too High

What Does Code P0127 Mean?

Diagnostic Trouble Code P0127 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected an intake air temperature (IAT) higher than the allowable limit. The ECM determines that the air entering the engine is excessively hot or that the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is reporting an unrealistically high temperature.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Poor acceleration
  • Engine knocking or spark knock under load
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Higher intake air temperature shown on the scan tool

How to Diagnose

1. Visual Inspection

  • Inspect the air filter and intake duct for restrictions or damage.
  • Check the IAT sensor connector for corrosion or loose terminals.
  • Inspect the wiring harness for melted insulation or contact with hot engine components.

2. Live Data Test (Autel)

  • Open Diagnosis → Engine → Live Data.
  • Select Intake Air Temperature (IAT).
  • With a cold engine, compare the IAT reading to the ambient air temperature.
  • During normal driving, the IAT value should remain within a reasonable range for the operating conditions.
  • If the scan tool displays an unrealistically high temperature, inspect the IAT sensor and its wiring.

3. Multimeter Test

  • Verify the 5V reference voltage.
  • Check sensor ground continuity.
  • Measure the IAT sensor resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's temperature specifications.
  • Inspect the signal wire for a short to ground.

4. Smoke Test (If Applicable)

A smoke test is recommended if an intake air leak is suspected. Vacuum leaks downstream of the air filter or intake duct damage may affect IAT sensor readings and engine performance.

Common Repairs

  • Replace the faulty IAT sensor.
  • Replace a dirty or clogged air filter.
  • Repair damaged intake ducts.
  • Repair shorted or damaged wiring.
  • Clean or replace the electrical connector.
  • Clear the DTC and verify proper IAT readings during a road test.

Severity

Moderate. P0127 can reduce engine performance and fuel economy but usually does not prevent the vehicle from being driven.
