P0110 – Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Circuit Malfunction

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0110 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected a malfunction in the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor circuit. The IAT sensor measures the temperature of the air entering the engine so the ECM can optimize fuel injection, ignition timing, and emissions control.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is illuminated.
  • Hard starting, especially in cold weather.
  • Rough idle.
  • Poor engine performance.
  • Reduced fuel economy.
  • Engine hesitation during acceleration.
  • Increased exhaust emissions.

Possible Causes

  • Faulty IAT sensor.
  • Open circuit in the sensor wiring.
  • Short circuit in the wiring.
  • Loose or corroded electrical connector.
  • Poor ground connection.
  • 5V reference circuit fault (where applicable).
  • ECM fault (rare).

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Read all stored and pending DTCs.
  2. Inspect the IAT sensor connector and wiring.
  3. Verify the sensor power supply and ground.
  4. Check sensor resistance according to the service manual.
  5. Compare IAT live data with ambient temperature.
  6. Repair wiring faults before replacing the sensor.
  7. Replace the IAT sensor only after confirming failure.

Live Data Diagnosis (Autel Scanner)

Using an Autel scan tool:

  1. Go to ECM → Live Data.
  2. Select the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) parameter.
  3. With the engine cold, the IAT reading should be close to the ambient air temperature.
  4. As the intake air warms, the temperature should change gradually without sudden jumps.
  5. If the value is fixed at an unrealistic temperature (such as -40°C or over 140°C), inspect the sensor, connector, and wiring.

Smoke Test

A smoke test is generally not required for diagnosing DTC P0110 because this code relates to the electrical circuit of the IAT sensor.

However, if an intake air leak is suspected after the sensor, performing a smoke test may help identify unmetered air entering the intake system.

Common Repairs

  • Repair damaged wiring.
  • Clean or replace corroded terminals.
  • Repair connector damage.
  • Replace the faulty IAT sensor.
  • Repair intake air leaks if found.

Important Note

Do not replace the IAT sensor without checking live data and verifying the wiring. Many P0110 faults are caused by damaged connectors, open circuits, or poor electrical connections rather than a failed sensor.
