P0109 – Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Circuit Intermittent
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0109 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected an intermittent or erratic signal from the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. Instead of providing a stable pressure reading, the MAP sensor signal fluctuates unexpectedly or is temporarily lost, resulting in incorrect engine load calculations.
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light is illuminated.
- Intermittent rough idle.
- Engine hesitation.
- Occasional loss of power.
- Hard starting.
- Poor fuel economy.
- Engine may stall unexpectedly.
Possible Causes
- Loose or damaged MAP sensor connector.
- Intermittent open or short circuit in the wiring.
- Corroded electrical terminals.
- Faulty MAP sensor.
- Poor ground connection.
- Damaged or leaking vacuum hose (if equipped).
- Vacuum leak in the intake manifold.
- ECM fault (rare).
Diagnostic Procedure
- Read all stored and pending DTCs.
- Inspect the MAP sensor connector for loose or corroded terminals.
- Perform a wiggle test on the wiring harness while monitoring live data.
- Inspect the vacuum hose and intake manifold for leaks.
- Verify the 5V reference, ground, and signal circuits.
- Repair electrical or vacuum faults before replacing the sensor.
- Replace the MAP sensor only after confirming an intermittent internal failure.
Live Data Diagnosis (Autel Scanner)
Using an Autel scan tool:
- Go to ECM → Live Data.
- Monitor the MAP (kPa) value.
- With the ignition ON and engine OFF, the MAP reading should typically be around 95–101 kPa, depending on altitude.
- At idle, the MAP value is generally 25–40 kPa on naturally aspirated gasoline engines.
- While the engine is running, gently move the MAP connector and wiring harness. If the reading suddenly drops, spikes, or fluctuates without throttle movement, inspect the wiring, connector, and sensor.

Important Note
P0109 is commonly caused by intermittent wiring or connector problems rather than a defective MAP sensor. Always perform a wiggle test, inspect the electrical circuits, verify live data, and rule out vacuum leaks before replacing the sensor.
