P0111 – Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Range/Performance Problem

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0111 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor signal that is outside the expected operating range or does not match other engine operating conditions. This is a performance-related fault rather than a complete circuit failure.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is illuminated.
  • Hard starting.
  • Rough idle.
  • Poor engine performance.
  • Engine hesitation during acceleration.
  • Reduced fuel economy.
  • Increased exhaust emissions.

Possible Causes

  • Faulty IAT sensor.
  • Dirty or contaminated sensor.
  • Loose or corroded electrical connector.
  • Damaged wiring harness.
  • Open or short circuit in the IAT circuit.
  • Air intake system problems affecting temperature readings.
  • ECM fault (rare).

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Read all stored and pending DTCs.
  2. Inspect the IAT sensor and connector.
  3. Check the wiring for opens, shorts, or corrosion.
  4. Compare the IAT reading with ambient air temperature.
  5. Compare IAT data with Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) after the engine has been sitting for several hours.
  6. Repair wiring or intake problems before replacing the sensor.
  7. Replace the IAT sensor only if testing confirms failure.

Live Data Diagnosis (Autel Scanner)

Using an Autel scan tool:

  1. Go to ECM → Live Data.
  2. Monitor the IAT (°C or °F) parameter.
  3. With a cold engine, the IAT reading should be close to the outside air temperature.
  4. The IAT value should change gradually as intake air temperature changes.
  5. If the reading is unrealistic, unstable, or significantly different from ambient temperature without a valid reason, inspect the sensor and wiring.

Note: Some vehicles have the IAT sensor integrated into the MAF sensor, while others use a separate sensor. Connector design, wiring colors, and electrical specifications vary between manufacturers.

Smoke Test

A smoke test is generally not required for DTC P0111 because this is primarily a sensor performance fault.

If an intake air leak is suspected after the IAT sensor, a smoke test can help locate leaks that may affect sensor readings.

Common Repairs

  • Repair damaged wiring.
  • Repair or replace corroded connectors.
  • Clean or replace the IAT sensor.
  • Repair intake air leaks if present.
  • Replace the IAT sensor if testing confirms failure.

Important Note

P0111 often occurs when the IAT sensor reading is inconsistent with actual intake air temperature. Always compare live data with ambient temperature and inspect the wiring before replacing the sensor.
