P0096 – Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance
Description
The P0096 trouble code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 2 signal that is outside the expected operating range or does not match engine operating conditions. This sensor helps the ECM calculate the correct air-fuel mixture and ignition timing.
Common Causes
Faulty IAT Sensor 2, contaminated sensor, damaged wiring, loose or corroded connector, intake air leaks, or a faulty ECM (rare).
Symptoms
Check Engine Light ON, rough idle, poor fuel economy, reduced engine performance, hesitation during acceleration, and hard starting.

Live Data Check
Monitor Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 using a scan tool. Compare the reading with the ambient temperature when the engine is cold. During engine operation, verify that the temperature changes smoothly and remains within a reasonable range. Compare the IAT Sensor 2 value with IAT Sensor 1 (if equipped) and the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor for consistency.
Estimated Repair Cost
Typical repair costs range from $20 to $200, depending on whether the issue is the sensor, connector, or wiring.
Severity
Low to Moderate. The vehicle is usually drivable, but incorrect intake air temperature data can reduce engine performance, fuel economy, and increase emissions.
Recommended Fix
Inspect the IAT Sensor 2 and its connector, verify the 5V reference and ground, compare live data with actual ambient temperature, repair wiring if necessary, replace the sensor if faulty, clear the DTC, and verify the repair.
