U0133 Code – Lost Communication With Active Roll Control Module

Description

The U0133 Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) indicates that one or more control modules have lost communication with the Active Roll Control Module (ARC) over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The ARC module is responsible for controlling body roll during cornering to improve vehicle stability and handling. When communication is interrupted, the system may disable active suspension functions and store the U0133 code.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light or suspension warning light illuminated.
  • "Active Roll Control Fault" or similar message on the instrument cluster.
  • Reduced vehicle stability while cornering.
  • Active suspension system enters fail-safe mode.
  • Additional CAN communication codes may also be stored.

Common Causes

  • Open or short circuit in the CAN High or CAN Low wiring.
  • Blown fuse supplying the Active Roll Control Module.
  • Poor battery voltage, power supply, or ground connection.
  • Loose, damaged, or corroded electrical connectors.
  • Faulty Active Roll Control Module.
  • Incorrect module programming after replacement.

Severity

Severity: Moderate to High. The vehicle may still be drivable, but the Active Roll Control system can be disabled, resulting in increased body roll and reduced handling performance. Repairs should be performed promptly to maintain vehicle safety and stability.

Average Repair Cost

  • CAN bus wiring repair: $100–$350
  • Power or ground circuit repair: $80–$250
  • Connector cleaning or replacement: $50–$200
  • Fuse replacement: $10–$50
  • Active Roll Control Module programming: $100–$300
  • Active Roll Control Module replacement: $600–$1,800+

Diagnosis

  1. Scan all vehicle modules and record all stored DTCs.
  2. Inspect related fuses and verify battery voltage.
  3. Check power and ground circuits at the ARC module.
  4. Inspect CAN High and CAN Low wiring for opens or shorts.
  5. Examine connectors for corrosion, water intrusion, or loose terminals.
  6. Verify CAN communication using a professional scan tool.
  7. Reprogram or replace the Active Roll Control Module only after confirming all circuits are operating correctly.

Common Repairs

  • Repair damaged CAN bus wiring.
  • Replace blown fuses.
  • Repair poor power or ground connections.
  • Clean or replace damaged electrical connectors.
  • Reprogram the Active Roll Control Module.
  • Replace the Active Roll Control Module if confirmed faulty.
