What is VSS? (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

The VSS stands for Vehicle Speed Sensor. It measures the speed of the vehicle and sends this information to the ECU, TCM, and instrument cluster.


Function of the VSS

  • Measures vehicle speed in real time.
  • Sends speed signal to ECU for fuel control.
  • Helps automatic transmission shift gears properly.
  • Controls speedometer reading.
  • Supports ABS and cruise control systems (in some cars).

Location of the VSS

  • Mounted on the transmission gearbox.
  • Sometimes located near the differential.
  • Older cars may use cable-driven speed sensors.

Symptoms of a Faulty VSS

  • Speedometer not working or incorrect reading.
  • Harsh or incorrect gear shifting (automatic transmission).
  • Check Engine Light ON.
  • Cruise control not working.
  • Loss of engine performance or limp mode.

OBD-II Trouble Codes Related to VSS

  • P0500 – Vehicle Speed Sensor malfunction
  • P0501 – VSS range/performance problem
  • P0502 – VSS low input
  • P0503 – VSS intermittent signal

VSS Electrical Circuit

The VSS works by generating a pulse signal based on wheel or transmission speed.

  • 5V reference or 12V supply (depending on type)
  • Ground wire
  • Signal wire (pulse output)

The ECU reads pulse frequency to calculate vehicle speed.


Voltage / Signal Behavior

  • At rest: 0V or no signal
  • Low speed: low-frequency pulse signal
  • High speed: high-frequency pulse signal
  • Signal type: square wave (digital pulses)

  • Magnetic pickup sensor
  • Hall effect sensor (most modern cars)

Important Notes
