What is CAN? (Controller Area Network)
The CAN system stands for Controller Area Network. It is a communication network used in modern vehicles that allows all control modules (ECU, PCM, BCM, ABS, etc.) to exchange data with each other without needing direct wiring between every component.
Function of CAN Bus
- Allows communication between all vehicle modules.
- Reduces wiring complexity inside the vehicle.
- Improves data speed and reliability.
- Helps modules share sensor information (speed, temperature, load, etc.).
- Supports diagnostics through OBD-II scanner.
How CAN System Works
Instead of each sensor sending separate wires to every module, CAN uses a shared communication line. All modules send and receive digital messages over the same network. Each message contains an ID and data (not just voltage).
CAN Network Location
- Runs throughout the entire vehicle wiring harness.
- Connected to ECU/PCM, BCM, ABS, transmission module, and others.
- Accessible at OBD-II diagnostic port (pins 6 and 14).
CAN Bus Wiring
- CAN High (CAN-H)
- CAN Low (CAN-L)
- Twisted pair wires to reduce electrical noise.
- 120Ω termination resistors at both ends of the network.
Voltage Levels (Important)
- Idle (Recessive state): both lines around 2.5V
- CAN High (dominant): ~3.5V
- CAN Low (dominant): ~1.5V
- Signal is a differential voltage (difference between CAN-H and CAN-L)
Types of CAN Systems
- High-Speed CAN (engine, transmission, ABS)
- Low-Speed CAN (comfort systems like windows, lights)
- Single-Wire CAN (SWCAN) (some manufacturers)
Symptoms of CAN Bus Problems
- Car does not start or enters limp mode.
- Multiple warning lights on dashboard.
- Loss of communication with scanner.
- Random failure of multiple systems.
- Speedometer or gauges not working.
OBD-II Trouble Codes (CAN Related)
- U0001 – High-speed CAN communication issue
- U0100 – Lost communication with ECM/PCM
- U0121 – Lost communication with ABS module
- U0140 – Lost communication with BCM
- U-codes generally indicate network communication faults
CAN Electrical Circuit
- Twisted pair wiring: CAN-H and CAN-L
- 120Ω termination resistors (usually 2 total in system)
- Power supply: 12V to modules, but CAN signals use low voltage differential signals
- Ground shared between modules
Common Causes of CAN Failure
- Broken or shorted CAN wires
- Water or corrosion in connectors
- Faulty ECU/BCM/ABS module
- Low battery voltage
- Aftermarket alarm or wiring modification issues
Repair Cost
- Wiring repair: low to medium cost
- Diagnosis with scanner: medium cost
- Module replacement: $100 – $1000+ depending on ECU/BCM/ABS
Important Notes
CAN Bus is the “nervous system” of the car. A small wiring fault can affect many systems at once, so proper electrical diagnosis (continuity + voltage + scan tool) is required before replacing any module.
