What is LIN? (Local Interconnect Network)

The LIN system stands for Local Interconnect Network. It is a low-cost communication network used in modern vehicles to connect simple components like door modules, mirrors, sensors, and switches to a main controller (usually BCM).


Function of LIN Bus

  • Connects low-speed body electronics in the vehicle.
  • Reduces wiring compared to direct connections.
  • Works as a sub-network under CAN system.
  • Controls devices like mirrors, windows, rain sensors, and seat modules.
  • Transfers simple commands between master and slave modules.

How LIN System Works

LIN is a master-slave system. The master module (usually BCM) sends commands, and slave devices respond. Unlike CAN, LIN is not multi-master and is simpler and slower.


LIN Network Location

  • Inside door wiring harness (windows, locks, mirrors).
  • Connected to BCM (Body Control Module).
  • Used in seats, roof modules, wipers, and sensors.

LIN Electrical Circuit

  • Single wire communication line (LIN Bus wire)
  • 12V power supply (varies by module)
  • Ground connection
  • Master module controls communication timing

Voltage Levels (Important)

  • Recessive state: around 12V (high level)
  • Dominant state: near 0V (low level)
  • Signal is a digital square wave
  • Communication speed: up to ~19.2 kbps

Types of LIN Usage

  • Door control modules (windows/locks)
  • Side mirror adjustment and heating
  • Rain/light sensors
  • Seat control systems
  • HVAC actuators (air flap motors)

Symptoms of LIN Bus Problems

  • One door system not working (window or lock failure).
  • Mirror adjustment not responding.
  • Seat controls malfunctioning.
  • Intermittent operation of small electrical components.
  • Communication error codes in BCM.

OBD-II / Diagnostic Codes (LIN Related)

  • U-codes (communication loss with module)
  • U0140 – Lost communication with BCM
  • U0155 – Lost communication with instrument cluster
  • Manufacturer-specific LIN fault codes (B-codes)

Common Causes of LIN Failure

  • Broken single-wire LIN line.
  • Water damage in door wiring harness.
  • Faulty slave module (window motor, mirror module).
  • BCM communication failure.
  • Low battery voltage or poor ground.

Repair / Replacement Cost

  • Wiring repair: low cost
  • Module replacement (window motor, mirror, etc.): $30 – $300+
  • BCM-related diagnosis or repair: medium cost

Important Notes

LIN is a simple sub-network under CAN. If one LIN device fails, usually only one function stops working (not the whole car), which helps in fast diagnosis.
