What is IMMO? (Immobilizer System)
The IMMO stands for Immobilizer System. It is an anti-theft security system in modern vehicles that prevents the engine from starting without the correct key or transponder signal.
Function of the Immobilizer (IMMO)
- Blocks engine start if the key is not authorized.
- Communicates with ECU/PCM to allow or deny ignition.
- Uses a transponder chip inside the key.
- Improves vehicle anti-theft protection.
How IMMO System Works
When you insert the key or press start:
- The key sends a coded signal to the immobilizer or ECU.
- The ECU checks if the code matches stored data.
- If correct → engine starts normally.
- If incorrect → fuel injection or ignition is blocked.
Components of IMMO System
- Transponder key (chip key)
- Immobilizer antenna ring (around ignition switch)
- ECU / PCM
- Immobilizer control module (in some cars separate, in others integrated)
Location of IMMO System
- Antenna ring: around ignition barrel or start button.
- IMMO module: inside dashboard or integrated in ECU/BCM.
- Key chip: inside the plastic key head.
Symptoms of IMMO Problems
- Engine cranks but does not start.
- Key warning light flashing on dashboard.
- “Key Not Recognized” message.
- Intermittent starting issues.
- No fuel injection or no spark.

IMMO Electrical Circuit

- RF signal (radio frequency) between key and antenna
Voltage Values
- System power: 12V
- Control circuits: 5V (internal ECU/BCM reference)
- CAN communication: ~2.5V–3.5V differential signals
- Antenna signal: low-power RF (not fixed voltage)
