What is ECU? (Engine Control Unit)
The ECU stands for Engine Control Unit. It is an electronic computer that controls and manages the engine’s operation by reading data from sensors and controlling actuators.
Function of the ECU
- Controls fuel injection timing and quantity.
- Controls ignition timing (spark timing).
- Adjusts air-fuel mixture for performance and efficiency.
- Controls idle speed.
- Manages emissions systems (EGR, EVAP, etc.).
- Monitors engine sensors in real time.
Location of the ECU
- Usually in the engine bay near firewall or fuse box.
- Sometimes inside the cabin under dashboard.
- Protected in a sealed metal or plastic housing.
Symptoms of a Faulty ECU
- Engine does not start.
- Random stalling or misfiring.
- Poor fuel economy.
- Multiple warning lights on dashboard.
- Loss of communication with OBD scanner.
- Limp mode activation.
OBD-II Trouble Codes Related to ECU
- P0600 – Serial communication error
- P0601 – Internal memory error
- P0602 – Programming error
- P0603 – Keep Alive Memory error
- P0604 – RAM error
- P0605 – ROM error
- P0606 – Processor fault
ECU Electrical Circuit
The ECU works through multiple electrical inputs and outputs:
- 12V battery power supply
- Ignition switch power (ON/START signal)
- Ground connections
- 5V reference voltage for sensors
- Signal return wires from sensors
- CAN Bus communication lines (CAN-H / CAN-L)
Voltage Values
- Main power: 12V system voltage
- Sensor reference: 5V regulated supply
- Signal range: 0.1V – 4.9V depending on sensor
- CAN communication: ~2.5V–3.5V differential signals
Types of ECU Systems
- Engine ECU (controls only engine functions)
- PCM (Powertrain Control Module = engine + transmission)
- Integrated ECU systems (networked with BCM, ABS, etc.)
Repair / Replacement Cost
- Reprogramming / flashing: medium cost
- Electrical diagnosis: depends on workshop
- Replacement ECU: approximately $200 – $1200+
Important Notes
ECU failure is rare compared to sensor or wiring faults. Always check power supply, grounds, and CAN communication before replacing it.
