What Does Code P0116 Mean?

Diagnostic Trouble Code P0116 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor signal that is outside the expected operating range or is changing in a way that does not match normal engine warm-up conditions. Unlike P0115, this code usually means the sensor is working but its readings are implausible.

How to Diagnose

1. Visual Inspection

  • Check the coolant level.
  • Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion or loose terminals.
  • Inspect wiring for damage or contact with hot engine components.

2. Live Data Test (Autel)

  • Open Diagnosis → Engine → Live Data.
  • Select Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT).
  • Start the engine when completely cold.
  • The ECT value should be close to ambient temperature.
  • Monitor the temperature as the engine warms up. The reading should increase gradually and smoothly without sudden jumps.
  • If the temperature remains very low for an extended period, suspect a thermostat stuck open.
  • If the temperature rises excessively within a short time, inspect the cooling system and thermostat.

3. Multimeter Test

  • Verify the 5V reference voltage.
  • Check sensor ground continuity.
  • Measure sensor resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's temperature specifications.

4. Smoke Test (If Applicable)

A smoke test is generally not required for P0116. However, if vacuum leaks are suspected after cooling system or intake repairs, a smoke machine may help identify intake leaks affecting engine operation.

Common Repairs

  • Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor.
  • Replace a faulty thermostat.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor electrical connections.
  • Refill coolant and properly bleed air from the cooling system.
  • Repair cooling system leaks.
  • Clear the DTC and perform a complete drive cycle.

Severity

Moderate to High. Driving with P0116 can reduce fuel economy, affect engine performance, and may eventually cause overheating or increased engine wear if the cooling system problem is ignored.
