P0106 – Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Performance Problem

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0106 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected a MAP sensor signal that is outside the expected operating range or is not consistent with other engine operating parameters such as throttle position and engine speed. This is a performance or range fault rather than a complete circuit failure.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is illuminated.
  • Rough or unstable idle.
  • Poor acceleration.
  • Reduced engine power.
  • Engine hesitation.
  • Increased fuel consumption.
  • Occasional engine stalling.

Possible Causes

  • Faulty MAP sensor.
  • Vacuum leak in the intake system.
  • Restricted air intake.
  • Damaged vacuum hose (if equipped).
  • Loose or corroded MAP connector.
  • Open or short circuit in the MAP wiring.
  • Incorrect engine timing.
  • ECM fault (rare).

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Read all stored and pending DTCs.
  2. Inspect the MAP sensor and electrical connector.
  3. Check the intake system for vacuum leaks.
  4. Inspect the vacuum hose for damage (if equipped).
  5. Verify the 5V reference, signal, and ground circuits.
  6. Compare MAP, TPS, and RPM values using live data.
  7. Replace the MAP sensor only after confirming the fault.

Live Data Diagnosis (Autel Scanner)

Using an Autel scan tool:

  1. Open ECM → Live Data.
  2. Monitor the MAP (kPa), Throttle Position (%), and Engine RPM.
  3. With the ignition ON and engine OFF, the MAP value should typically read 95–101 kPa depending on altitude.
  4. At idle, most naturally aspirated gasoline engines read approximately 25–40 kPa.
  5. The MAP value should change smoothly as the throttle opens. If it remains fixed, fluctuates abnormally, or does not correspond with throttle position and RPM, inspect the sensor and intake system.

Smoke Test

If a smoke machine is available, perform a smoke test on the intake system.

  • Inspect intake hoses.
  • Check vacuum hoses.
  • Inspect the intake manifold gasket.
  • Inspect the throttle body gasket.

Vacuum leaks are one of the most common causes of DTC P0106 and should always be repaired before replacing the MAP sensor.

Common Repairs

  • Repair intake vacuum leaks.
  • Replace damaged vacuum hoses.
  • Repair damaged wiring.
  • Clean or repair electrical connectors.
  • Replace the MAP sensor if testing confirms failure.

Important Note

P0106 is a performance-related fault and does not always indicate a defective MAP sensor. Verify live data, vacuum integrity, and electrical circuits before replacing any components.
