P0105 – Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Circuit Malfunction

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0105 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected a malfunction in the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor circuit. The MAP sensor measures the pressure inside the intake manifold, allowing the ECM to calculate engine load and adjust fuel injection and ignition timing.

Symptoms

• Check Engine Light is illuminated.
• Rough idle.
• Poor engine performance.
• Engine hesitation during acceleration.
• Hard starting.
• Reduced fuel economy.
• Engine may stall in severe cases.

Possible Causes

• Faulty MAP sensor.
• Damaged or disconnected vacuum hose (if equipped).
• Open or short circuit in the wiring.
• Loose or corroded electrical connector.
• Poor sensor ground.
• 5V reference circuit fault.
• Vacuum leak in the intake system.
• ECM fault (rare).

Diagnostic Procedure

1. Read all stored and pending DTCs.
2. Inspect the MAP sensor connector and wiring.
3. Check the vacuum hose for cracks, leaks, or disconnection (if applicable).
4. Verify the 5V reference, ground, and signal circuits.
5. Compare MAP sensor readings with engine operating conditions.
6. Repair wiring or vacuum leaks before replacing the sensor.
7. Replace the MAP sensor only after confirming it has failed.

Live Data Diagnosis (Autel Scanner)

Using an Autel scan tool:

1. Go to ECM → Live Data.
2. Select the MAP parameter (kPa or psi).
3. With the ignition ON and engine OFF, the MAP value should be close to atmospheric pressure (typically around 95–101 kPa, depending on altitude).
4. At idle, the MAP value typically drops to approximately 25–40 kPa on naturally aspirated gasoline engines.
5. If the reading is fixed, erratic, or does not respond to throttle changes, inspect the sensor, vacuum supply, and wiring.

If a smoke machine is available, perform a smoke test on the intake system.

• Inspect all vacuum hoses.
• Check the intake manifold gasket.
• Inspect the throttle body gasket.
• Repair any vacuum leaks before replacing the MAP sensor.

Vacuum leaks can significantly affect MAP sensor readings and trigger DTC P0105.

Common Repairs

• Repair damaged wiring.
• Replace a damaged connector.
• Repair or replace the vacuum hose.
• Repair intake vacuum leaks.
• Replace the MAP sensor if testing confirms failure.

Important Note

Do not replace the MAP sensor immediately. Many P0105 faults are caused by vacuum leaks, damaged wiring, or poor electrical connections. Always verify live data and electrical circuits before installing a new sensor.
