The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0103 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected a higher-than-expected voltage signal from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. This usually means the sensor is reporting more airflow than expected, which can affect fuel delivery and engine performance.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is illuminated.
  • Rough idle.
  • Poor engine performance.
  • Black exhaust smoke.
  • High fuel consumption.
  • Engine hesitation during acceleration.
  • Hard starting in some cases.

Possible Causes

  • Faulty MAF sensor.
  • Short to voltage in the MAF signal circuit.
  • Damaged or corroded connector.
  • Open or poor ground circuit.
  • Contaminated MAF sensor.
  • Aftermarket high-flow air filter affecting sensor readings.
  • ECM fault (rare).

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Scan for all stored DTCs.
  2. Inspect the MAF sensor connector and wiring.
  3. Check for damaged insulation or shorted wires.
  4. Verify the 5V reference (if applicable), power supply, and ground.
  5. Clean the MAF sensor using MAF sensor cleaner.
  6. Compare live data with expected airflow values.
  7. Replace the sensor only after confirming it has failed.

Live Data Diagnosis (Autel Scanner)

Using an Autel scan tool:

  1. Select ECM → Live Data.
  2. Monitor the MAF (g/s) parameter.
  3. At idle, airflow is typically around 2–7 g/s depending on engine size.
  4. If the reading is excessively high at idle or jumps suddenly without throttle movement, inspect the sensor and wiring.
  5. Compare MAF readings with RPM and throttle position to verify they increase smoothly together.

Smoke Test

A smoke test is recommended to inspect the intake system for leaks.

  • Inspect the intake duct.
  • Check vacuum hoses.
  • Inspect the intake manifold.
  • Repair any leaks found before replacing the MAF sensor.

Although P0103 usually indicates a high signal, verifying intake system integrity is still an important diagnostic step.

Common Repairs

  • Clean the MAF sensor.
  • Repair damaged wiring.
  • Repair a short-to-voltage condition.
  • Replace a damaged connector.
  • Replace the MAF sensor if testing confirms failure.

Important Note

Do not replace the MAF sensor solely because DTC P0103 is stored. Inspect the electrical circuits, connector condition, and live data first. Many high-input faults are caused by wiring problems rather than a failed sensor.
