P0102 – Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Circuit Low Input
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0102 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected a lower-than-expected signal from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. The MAF sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine so the ECM can calculate the correct fuel injection. A low signal may result in poor engine performance and increased emissions.
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light is illuminated.
- Reduced engine power.
- Poor acceleration.
- Rough idle or engine stalling.
- Hard starting.
- Increased fuel consumption.
Possible Causes
- Dirty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
- Faulty MAF sensor.
- Damaged or corroded electrical connector.
- Open or short circuit in the wiring harness.
- Clogged air filter.
- Air intake restriction.
- Low reference voltage or poor ground.
- Vacuum leak after the MAF sensor.
Diagnostic Procedure
- Read all stored DTCs using an OBD-II scan tool.
- Inspect the MAF sensor connector and wiring for damage.
- Check the air filter and intake duct for restrictions or leaks.
- Clean the MAF sensor using a dedicated MAF cleaner.
- Verify the sensor receives proper power supply and ground.
- Compare live data values with engine operating conditions.
- Repair wiring faults before replacing the sensor.
Live Data Diagnosis (Autel Scanner)
Using an Autel scan tool:
- Open ECM → Live Data.
- Select the MAF (g/s) parameter.
- At idle, most gasoline engines typically read between 2–7 g/s depending on engine size.
- Gradually increase engine speed. The airflow value should increase smoothly without sudden drops.
- If the reading remains extremely low or zero while the engine is running, inspect the sensor power, ground, signal wire, and intake system.

Smoke Test
If a smoke machine is available, perform a smoke test on the air intake system.
- Inspect the intake hose.
- Check vacuum hoses.
- Inspect the intake manifold for leaks.
- Repair any leaks found after the MAF sensor.
Air leaks can cause incorrect airflow readings and trigger DTC P0102.
Common Repairs
- Clean the MAF sensor.
- Repair damaged wiring.
- Replace a faulty connector.
- Replace the clogged air filter.
- Repair intake air leaks.
- Replace the MAF sensor if testing confirms failure.
Important Note
Do not replace the MAF sensor immediately after seeing DTC P0102. Many cases are caused by contaminated sensors, damaged wiring, poor electrical connections, or intake air leaks. Always complete a full diagnosis before replacing components.
