What is PCM? (Powertrain Control Module)
The PCM stands for Powertrain Control Module. It is the main computer in modern vehicles that controls both the engine (ECU functions) and sometimes the transmission (TCU functions) in one unit.
Function of the PCM
- Controls fuel injection and ignition timing.
- Manages transmission shifting (in many vehicles).
- Monitors sensor data (MAF, MAP, O2, TPS, etc.).
- Controls emissions systems.
- Adjusts engine performance for efficiency and power.
Location of the PCM
- Usually located in the engine bay near the fuse box.
- Sometimes installed inside the cabin (under dashboard).
- Mounted in a protected, waterproof metal housing.
Symptoms of a Faulty PCM
- Engine will not start or hard starting.
- Random stalling or misfiring.
- Transmission shifting problems.
- Multiple warning lights on dashboard.
- Reduced engine power (limp mode).
- Complete communication failure with diagnostic scanner.
OBD-II Trouble Codes Related to PCM
- P0600 – Serial communication error
- P0601 – Internal control module memory error
- P0602 – Programming error
- P0603 – Keep alive memory (KAM) error
- P0604 – Internal RAM error
- P0605 – ROM error
- P0606 – PCM processor fault
PCM Electrical Circuit
The PCM is powered by multiple circuits:
- Battery Power (12V constant)
- Ignition switched power (IG1 / IG2)
- Ground circuits
- CAN Bus communication lines (CAN High / CAN Low)
It communicates with all sensors and actuators through signal wires and CAN network.
Voltage Supply
- Main supply: 12V battery voltage
- Internal regulated voltage: 5V reference for sensors
- Communication signals: 2.5V–3.5V (CAN High/Low variation)

Important Notes
