What Does Code P0121 Mean?

Diagnostic Trouble Code P0121 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected that the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) "A" signal is outside the expected operating range or does not correlate correctly with other throttle-related sensors. The sensor may still produce a voltage signal, but the signal is implausible or inconsistent with the actual throttle position.

How to Diagnose

1. Visual Inspection

2. Live Data Test (Autel)

  • Open Diagnosis → Engine → Live Data.
  • Monitor Throttle Position Sensor A, Throttle Position Sensor B, and Accelerator Pedal Position (APP).
  • Slowly press and release the accelerator pedal.
  • The TPS values should change smoothly without sudden spikes or dropouts.
  • TPS A and TPS B should maintain the manufacturer's expected correlation.
  • If one signal changes erratically or does not match the others, inspect the sensor, throttle body, or wiring.

3. Multimeter Test

  • Verify the 5V reference voltage.
  • Check sensor ground continuity.
  • Measure TPS signal voltage while slowly opening the throttle.
  • The voltage should increase smoothly without interruption.

4. Smoke Test (If Applicable)

A smoke test is recommended if unstable idle or lean fuel trim codes are also present. Intake vacuum leaks can affect throttle airflow calculations and contribute to driveability complaints, although they are not the primary cause of P0121.

Common Repairs

  • Replace the faulty TPS sensor.
  • Replace the electronic throttle body if the TPS is integrated.
  • Clean the throttle body.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connectors.
