P0074 – Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent
The P0074 diagnostic trouble code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an intermittent or erratic signal from the Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) sensor circuit.
The ECM expects the ambient air temperature signal to change gradually under normal conditions. If the sensor signal fluctuates unexpectedly due to an intermittent electrical fault, the ECM stores the P0074 code and illuminates the Check Engine Light.
Common Symptoms
- Check Engine Light ON
- Outside temperature display changes unexpectedly
- Intermittent climate control operation
- Occasional A/C performance issues
Common Causes
- Loose or corroded sensor connector
- Intermittent open or short in the wiring harness
- Faulty ambient air temperature sensor
- Water intrusion into the connector
- Rarely, a faulty ECM
Basic Diagnosis
Inspect the sensor and connector for corrosion or loose terminals, wiggle the wiring harness while monitoring the sensor value with a scan tool, verify the reference voltage and ground, and repair any damaged wiring or replace the sensor if the signal remains unstable.
