P0063 – HO2S Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 3)
The P0063 diagnostic trouble code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a low voltage condition in the heater control circuit of the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) located at Bank 1 Sensor 3.
The oxygen sensor heater allows the sensor to reach operating temperature quickly after engine startup. If the ECM detects voltage below the expected range in the heater circuit, it stores the P0063 code and illuminates the Check Engine Light.
Common Symptoms
- Check Engine Light ON
- Delayed oxygen sensor warm-up
- Slight increase in fuel consumption
- Usually no noticeable engine performance issues
Common Causes
- Faulty heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
- Short to ground in the heater control circuit
- Damaged wiring or loose connector
- Blown heater fuse
- Rarely, a faulty ECM
Basic Diagnosis
Inspect the sensor wiring and connector, check the heater fuse, verify the power supply and ground, and measure the heater resistance with a multimeter. Replace the oxygen sensor if the heater circuit does not meet the manufacturer's specifications.
Diagnostic Note: Bank 1 Sensor 3 is not used on all vehicles. Sensor locations, wiring colors, and electrical specifications vary by manufacturer and exhaust system design. Always refer to the factory service information before testing.
