The P0004 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic OBD-II powertrain code that indicates the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a high voltage condition in the Fuel Volume Regulator (FVR) control circuit. This regulator is responsible for controlling the amount of fuel delivered by the high-pressure fuel pump, helping maintain the correct fuel pressure for efficient engine operation.
When the voltage in the control circuit is higher than the manufacturer's specified range, the ECM stores the P0004 code and illuminates the Check Engine Light. This fault is commonly related to electrical problems such as damaged wiring, corroded connectors, or a faulty fuel volume regulator.
P0004 should not be ignored. Since it affects the fuel delivery system, it can cause poor engine performance, difficulty starting, or even prevent the engine from running. Continuing to drive with this fault may lead to additional fuel system problems.
P0004 may appear on many OBD-II vehicles equipped with electronic fuel pressure control systems, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Jeep, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, and others.
Driving may be possible if the engine still runs normally, but it is not recommended. The fault can worsen over time and may eventually result in a no-start condition or engine stalling.
The P0004 code indicates excessive voltage in the fuel volume regulator control circuit. In most cases, the problem is caused by damaged wiring, poor electrical connections, or a faulty regulator. Prompt diagnosis and repair will restore proper fuel system operation, improve engine performance, and prevent more expensive repairs.
